Beef cattle and other livestock possess a “built-in” mechanism to chew, digest, and to take care of the various necessities in utilizing the feeds they consume. Today, most of our livestock are forced to gain faster with greater efficiency and to make this performance in a shorter period of time. Through mechanization and other technological development we are able to produce food and fiber more efficiently and a product of higher quality. It is difficult to assess how much of this increase in feed efficiency can be attributed to any specific factor such as improved nutrition. We do know, however, that a great deal of emphasis has been placed on feed processing during the past several decades, particularly in the feedlot industry.
