The New Zealand Tourist and Publicity Department (NZTP reports that the number of foreign tourists visiting New Zealand rose from 596,995 in 1985 to 855,492 in 1988, with Japanese, West German, and British visitors accounting for much of the increase (see Exhibit 2) .The amount of money spent per day per tourist increased from $84 in 1986/87 to $97 in 1987/88; however, some of the tourists, notably the Japanese, who are visiting New Zealand in greater numbers, are not spending as much as they did previously .
