(Smith and Coach sit on bench watching basketball game. The sounds of a basketball game are heard, then the sound of a whistle.)
Coach:
Johnson fouled out!
Smith:
Yeah. Too bad.
Coach:
All our players except five have fouled out of the game! And you're one of those five! Get out there!
Smith:
But Coach, when I joined the team, I really wasn't expecting to play.
Coach:
What?
Smith:
I just wanted to be a part of the team! You know -- sit on the bench, wave the towel . . .
(Waves towel.)
. . .listen to you during timeouts, look good in the uniform . . .
Coach:
I don't believe this! It's the most important game of the year!
Smith:
I know!
Coach:
Then get out there!
Smith:
But Coach, we might lose if I go out there. Basketball is not my physical gift.
Coach:
Physical gift? What are you talking about?!
Smith:
Now, sitting on the bench, waving the towel -- those are my physical gifts.
Coach:
I don't care what your physical gifts are. Get out there!
Smith:
Now hold on one second! Who do you think you are?
Coach:
I'm your coach. Remember?
Smith:
I can't believe it. I show up to most of the practices. I show up for all the games! I keep track of the scores. I never get in anybody's way and you have the colossal nerve to tell me to play? Hey Coach, I bet you're a good basketball player. Why don't you play?
Coach:
I guess I am a pretty good basketball player. Well, fine! I think I will play.
(Coach unzips sweatshirt to reveal uniform. Runs off onto court.)
Smith:
All right Coach!
(Waves towel.)
Woo-hoo!
