2. Materials and methods
2.1. Aedes aegypti strains
A. aegypti specimens from Araripina, located at 7◦3245S and
40◦34W, and 690kmfrom Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil (Fig. 1), were
used as the parental population for the selection of the temephosresistant
colony. Mosquito eggs were collected in that location
in August 2004, with the use of ovitraps that were installed in
the peridomiciliary area of 50 houses for a period of 7 days. Eggs
were taken to the insectary of the Department of Entomology,
at CPqAM/FIOCRUZ, and raised until adult phase under standard
conditions (26◦ ±2 ◦C and 12 h/12 h light/dark photoperiod).
Approximately 1000 individuals, including males and females,
were used to establish the parental colony of the resistant strain,
named Recife-Resistente (RecR).
