The hydrodistillation of yellow strawberry guava yielded 0.1% of oil, which was analyzed and compared with the essential oil from red-skinned fruits studied by our group previously (Marin and others 2008). The chemical compositions of the oils are summarized in Table 2. The oil of red strawberry guava comprised only sesquiterpenes while the oil of the yellow-skinned fruit, was found to also contain monoterpenes (19.3%). The sesquiterpene hydrocarbon, β-caryophyllene was found to be the main compound in both red and yellow oils (22.5% and 28.7%, respectively).
