The issues of asbestos use and its impact on health in old age continue to be a problem worldwide. The export of asbestos by Canada to developing countries is, some suggest, setting the stage for another preventable occupational diseases epidemic that will manifest over the coming decades. Similarly, in countries such as China, Vietnam, India and Zimbabwe, a lack of regulation on asbestos and effective bans on its use appear unlikely at present. The increase in Central and Eastern European migrant taking up building work in Northern Europe means that, potentially, there will be an increase of asbestos-related disease. Although currently migrant workers tend to be younger, this will have implications for the host countries if migrants settle and grow older. However, there is relatively little published in the mainstream literature on the health and safety of migrant workers moving to poorly regulated urban building sites in Northern Europe.
