Orchidaceae plays an important role in the evolution of monocots and is one of the mostpopular families of flowering plants, as it is evident from its extensive distribution andnumerous species (25000 - 30000) (Chowdhery 2001). Increased popularity of cut flowerin Bangladesh has huge prospects in floriculture trade. Among them, Cymbidiumcomprises more than 70 natural species and 100s of manmade hybrids. This rich varietyhas contributed significantly to the development of the international trade in orchid cutflowers (Vij et al. 2004).
