PED teachers are instrumental in delivering quality SPED as they are key to shaping students’ learning experiences and bringing about positive learning outcomes. To this end, MOE ensures that training opportunities are made available for the professional development of SPED teachers.
Milestone courses are mounted for beginning teachers as well as for key personnel. Untrained teachers who join SPED schools undergo training leading to the Diploma in Special Education (DISE) conducted by the National Institute of Education (NIE). The DISE, which is a one-year full-time programme provides the foundational knowledge and skills for one to be an effective SPED teacher. MOE also launched the Advanced DISE conducted by NIE in 2014, which aims to enhance the professional development opportunities of experienced SPED teachers. The Advanced DISE aims to deepen participants’ knowledge and widen their repertoire of skills learnt in the DISE in supporting students with special educational needs.
If you are interested to teach in a Special Education (SPED) school, you may contact the Voluntary Welfare Organisation (VWO) running the school or the school directly. SPED teachers are employees of the VWOs running the SPED schools. MOE teachers who wish to be seconded to SPED schools may do so through the annual APEX exercise. SPED schools will advertise vacancies on the MOE Intranet during the APEX exercise.
