Around 80% of an ibuprofen oral dose is absorbed
from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma levels
occurring 1–2 hours after dosing. (McNeil, 1994) In one
study in children it was shown that ibuprofen suspension
is absorbed fastest, with peak plasma levels occurring
around 58 minutes, compared with 86 minutes for
chewable or conventional tablets (McNeil, 1994). The
antipyretic effect of ibuprofen starts to occur within
1 hour of dosing, but its full effect may not be seen until
2-4 hours after the dose (Walson et al, 1989). It is 90–99%
bound by plasma proteins and has a half-life of 2–4 hours
(Reckitt Benckiser 2009). Ibuprofen is eliminated through
metabolism, and excretion occurs via the urine
