The results show that gaining an understanding of the strategic value of ERP adoption is a predictor
of achieving competitive advantage. To the best of our knowledge, no prior studies have examined the
influence of desired strategic value on competitive advantage and, as such, this study has provided
new evidence of such a relationship.
The results imply that an understanding of the desired perceived strategic value in terms of
reduction in costs, improved customer service and improved operational managerial efficiencies is
crucial for achieving competitive differentiation (see Table 2). An understanding of the desired
strategic value is expected to help in focusing on areas that could produce such value. Managers will
also be able to provide leadership, resources and appropriate support.
