ABSTRACTObjective:Giventheincreasedpopularityofcomplementaryandalternativemedicine (CAM)andtraditionalChinesemedicine(TCM),thisstudyaimedtoevaluatetheeffectsofinteractive mediaonself-directedlearninginpatients’knowledgeofdiabetesandrelatedCAM/TCMstrategies,the abilitytocontrolbloodsugarlevels,andself-careinpeoplewithdiabetes.Design:Anexperimentalstudy designwasused.Theexperimentalgroupreceivedpatienteducationthroughinteractivemultimediaabout diabetesfor3months,whilethecontrolgroupreceivedaroutine3-monthpatienteducation.Sample:On completion,60subjectsfromTaiwanwereevaluated—30inanexperimentalgroupand30inacontrol group.Measurements:Datawerecollectedfrombothgroupsatbaselineandatthecompletionofthe patienteducation.Thefindingswerethencomparedtoevaluatetheeffectsoftheinterventiononthe subjects’knowledgeofdiabetes,bloodsugarcontrol,andself-care.Results:Theexperimentalgroup showedgreaterimprovementinunderstandingdiabetesthanthecontrol(t53.29,po.001).Therewasno significantdifferenceincontrolofbloodsugarlevels(t51.72,p5.10)andself-care(F51.03, p5.32).Conclusions:Theuseofaninteractivemultimediadevicetointerveneindiabetesself-carewas effectiveonlyinraisingthesubjects’knowledgeaboutthedisease.Additionally,thesubjectsmayneed moretimetoimplementmoreeffectivebloodsugarcontrolandself-careactivitiesafterreceivinginstruction.
