Travel compensation
Interpreters who are on the staff of an agency or institution may be expected to interpret in several different sites. If the interpreter uses this or her own car, will the agency pick up the cost of travel? Each agency will probably have a standard reimbursement rate for mileage; the interpreter will need to keep track of tolls and parking expenses, as well as miles. If the interpreter uses public transportation and the agency dose reimburse for car use, then similar records of the travel expenses should be submitted for reimbursement.
Interpreters who are hired as independent contractors (freelancers) need to find out whether travel time or travel expenses are reimbursed. The time to determine whether travel expenses will be paid for is at the time the assignment is offered and accepted.
