Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of proteases (enzymes that degrade proteins) that help regulate the microenvironment of cells by controlling GFs and GFRs and are active in cell adhesion and apoptosis. They can degrade the protein components of the ECM and basement membranes, as well. Some MMPs may generate specific signals that promote tumor development and the growth of new blood vessels to support tumor growth. Increased expression of MMPs is correlated with poor prognosis and more invasive malignant disease ( Bissell & Radisky, 2001 ; Connolly et al., 2006 ; Hojilla, Mohammed, & Khokha, 2003 ; Stamenkovic, 2003 ).
