While this is an effective method of training, it can be costly to send officers to take classroom training and it takes them away from their work.
Because of this, officers are not getting training in the more specialized subjects required in today's more complex law enforcement environment, for example computer crimes, human trafficking, intelligence, forensics, terrorism and organized crime.
Generalist and front line officers are not receiving modern training even though they are the ones on the ground most likely to come in contact with these crime types.
Because of the lack of adequate training, officers are only given basic and routine tasks for fear that they might cause more problems then they solve.
The result is that leads and evidence encountered by officers in the field are often damaged, ignored or not recognized because officers do not have adequate training to deal with these crimes, allowing criminals to operate with impunity.
