A dog is a great pet to have because it is good for your health, they can make good guards, and they provide you with the emotional stimulus you need. Having a pet dog improves your physical and mental wellbeing. Pets encourage you to get out and exercise. Whether we walk our dogs because they need it, or are more likely to enjoy a walk when we have companionship, dog owners do spend more time walking than non-pet owners. Because exercise is good for stress management and overall health, owning a dog can be credited with increasing these benefits. Pets can help with social support. When you’re out walking, having a dog with you can make you more approachable and give people a reason to stop and talk to you, increasing the number of people you meet, giving you an opportunity to increase your network of friends and acquaintances. As many benefits as pets bring, it's important not to become too dependent on those animal companions. Though they make great companions, in the end pets are still no substitute for human friends and family.
