A study presented in proceedings of National Academy of sciences, USA, indicates that broccoli, grown under the right contitions, contains solforaphane glucosinolate (SGS), a substance that may boost the body's natural defense systems against cancer and even kill cancer cells. But you would have to eat pounds of broccoli to get enough SGS to be effective. Continued food research by John Hopkins University, Baltimore, and the UADA, however, found that three-day-old broccoli seedlings contain a concentrated amountof SGS--20 times the amount found in broccoli--so only an ounce provides the same benefits. Sold as BroccoSprouts, the seedlings are grown under controlled conditions to ensure SGS content, and can be used on salad, sandwiches and omelet for a "zingy" test. They have been patented by John Hopkins University, 19 growers nationwide are licensed to grow them. BroccoSprouts are available in select grocery and health food stores nationwide.
