Tank experiments
with the rock crab Cancer irroratus (Miller, 1980) showed that
escape from top entrance pots could be eliminated by installing
plastic collars in the entrance that made crawling impossible
for crabs, and one-way triggers reduced escapement of large
crabs in side entrance pots. Fishing trials by the same author
(Miller, 1979b) indicated that pot saturation occurs after only
a few hours and that crabs inside the pots intimidate others
from entering.
