As Gly is a small amino acid
that facilitates a triple helical conformation, it appears that the FP
collagen structure was better stabilised by hydrogen bonds and
electrostatic interaction than the WP collagen. The cysteine content
was also greater in the total connective tissue and each of
the solubility fractions in the WP group. Cysteine (Cys) does not
take part in collagen type I structure so its presence may be a consequence
of elastin contamination, as has been previously indicated
