Rural electrified is still remained to be a challenge for Thailand due to it is long distribution from utility. Expansion of the electricity distribution to remote areas is too inconvenient, high cost then power system will be weak. Even so standards and regulations impose on suppliers and consumers the commitment to keep required power quality parameters.
Currently, Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) initiate to develop Micro Grid Project at Mae Sariang District, Mae Hongson Province as pilot remote area for maximum management ability, performance and solution to adjust appropriate system. Micro grid system helps to down time and cost of operation and maintenances, power losses in the system can be reduced [1]. But in microgrid have intermittent generation and load, they occur voltage variation and degrade power quality especially voltage flicker in area. Voltage flicker is the disturbance in power system by voltage fluctuation [2]. The main advantages of using STATCOM are reduction the voltage flicker severity value and improvement in power quality after installation of STATCOM. In this paper focus on voltage flicker mitigation by using STATCOMs. The proposed method is tested for decentralized STATCOM allocation in Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) micro grid at Mae Sariang.
The appropriate size and installation location are proposed and discussed
