To commemorate the Water Day on March 2009, the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nation (FAO) and its regional office in Latin America and the
Caribbean remarked that given the scarcity of water in the world the biggest challenge
facing agriculture is not only to produce more food, but also to do it with less water. They
also mentioned that agriculture is the human activity with the highest water consumption
with almost 70% of the total amount of water drawn from lakes, rivers, streams and
aquifers. Industry uses about 20% and municipal users the remaining 10%. However,
some developing countries spend about 90% of the liquid in agriculture (FAO, 2005).
