There are around 1.5 million people of Japanese origin living in Brazil – more than in any country apart from Japan. The first people from Japan marry to Brazil at the beginning of the last century looking for a better life. Most of them work on coffee plantations. Some of them come Brazilians,have. children and settled in their new country.
During the Second World War, Brazil didn’t allow the teaching of Japanese in schools and the children of the settlers speak only Portuguese. At the end of the war many more Japanese people return to stay in Brazil.
In the 1980s there were economic problems in Brazil while Japan’s economy begin to improve. A lot of Japanese families decide to Japan. Today there are around 300.000 Japanese Brazilians living in Japan.
