In March, 1999, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
aircraft fought a war for humanitarian purposes against ethnic
cleansing in Kosovo, and fired over 30000 penetrators containing
depleted uranium (DU) metal in 85 locations throughout Kosovo
(land size of 10887km2, with approximately 2 million inhabitants)
(UNEP, 2001). Since then, concerns over the environmental
uranium pollution and health hazard issues within the territory
of Kosovo have been raised.
