In the windows task, the participant sits opposite an opponent facing two opaque boxes. Unknown to either player, one box contains a treat (a chocolate). The participant’s task is to point to one of the boxes to indicate to the opponent that he or she should open it. If the opponent opens the baited box, they win the treat. If the opponent opens the empty box, the child wins. Hence, the child learns that it is best if possible to point to the empty box (so that they themselves will get the treat).
