Most people have to work really hard just to get by. It is a relatively small portion of people, less than a half of a percent, who can afford to enjoy other things and spend less time working. And that's in a first world country. In other countries, even fewer people will be able to cut back on work to enjoy things.
I wonder if you have ever tried to cut back and enjoy. Most people need to fill their time. Work provides a structured way for people to fill their time. It gives them purpose. It gives them a way to identify themselves and to feel a sense of pride in their lives. It provides status and self esteem.
When your time stretches out in front of you, many people don't know what to do with themselves. Many people who retire are lost for a while. Often, they will sstart working again. They can't spend more time with friends and family, because friends and family are all -- you guessed it -- working.
So they spend more time with people like themselves. Retired people move to Florida or Arizona and spend all their time with other retired people in retirement communities. People who don't have work before they are retired kind of disappear. They are either looking for work all the time, or volunteering, or hiding at home because they are too depressed to face anyone else.
People need to fill their time. They need to occupy themselves. The funny thing is that, the more lucrative your work becomes, the more you probably will like doing it. It enhances your status and your bank account. The more you get out of work, the more you want to do more of it. People actually enjoy it. There are very few people who can stop working and still find a community to spend time with. Most of them probably spend all their time traveling. And half of those are writing books about it.
