The current study investigated the conversion of palm oil sludge
to value added products through pyrolysis. 27.4 ± 1.7 wt.% bio-oil
and 49.9 ± 0.3 wt.% bio-char were obtained through pyrolysis.
The bio-oil properties were within the specifications of ASTM
D7544-09. High calorific value bio-oil (22.2 ± 3.7 MJ/kg) was
obtained which can be considered as a favorable candidate for
bio-refinery and can be used as liquid fuel by further upgrading.
Activated bio-char removed 89.4 ± 2% of cadmium from water,
which is comparable to the removal efficiency of commercial activated
carbon. Disposal of palm oil sludge as bio-char will not give
any hygienic issues.
