Adam went to the phone and pressed the numbers. He had a
message to ring Garner Goodman in Jackson. Urgently.
“Garner, it’s Adam. What’s happening?”
“Get yourself down here now,” Goodman said calmly. “Things
are moving.”
“Why? W hat is it?”
“Looks like one o f your claims is being taken seriously.”
“Which one?”
“Mental incompetence. Slattery wants a hearing at five this
afternoon. I’ve already talked to Dr. Swinn, and he’s ready. H e’ll
land in Jackson at three-thirty and be ready to give evidence.”
“I’m on my way,” Adam said.
“M eet me at the governor’s office.”
