We’re so much in the know about cancer. Participants contrasted their lack of knowledge
about stroke with their awareness of breast cancer. The women attributed “being in the know” about breast cancer to the availability of information about breast screening at providers’ offices, health fairs, and other community venues and to coverage in the media. The women felt that health and community organizations have made efforts to reach
African American women with information about breast cancer detection, but less has been done for stroke. Some of the women wondered if the emphasis on breast cancer, although important, drew attention away from other health issues affecting African American women.
