Anticipate the number and variety of supplies needed for procedure.
Complete all other priority tasks (e.g., medication administration, suctioning patient) before setting up sterile field.
Ask visitors to step out during setup. Discourage movement by staff.
Prepare equipment at bedside. Select a clean, flat, dry work surface above waist level to prepare as a sterile field.
Ensure all medications, solutions, and sterile receptacles to be used during procedure are available, labeled, and match the MAR.
Position patient for maximum comfort and ease of breathing for procedure. If a body part is to be examined or treated, position patient so area is accessible.
Perform hand hygiene. If organization practice requires PPE, don gloves, eye protection, head protection, mask, and gown.
