This air has passed above most of the warm tropical Indian Ocean and therefore now possesses a very high moisture content. The arrival of this saturated air over the Indian subcontinent marks the onset of the wet summer monsoon, and precipitation is frequent and heavy. As a matter of fact, the world record one-month precipitation total is held by the town of Cherrapunji in the hills of northeastern India (see p. 203), where in July of 1861930 cm (30 feet!) of rain fell. During the winter months of the dry monsoon, however precipitation values at Cherrapunji are normally on the order of 1 to 2 cm (0.5 to 1.0).
