Although all preventive programs may share in these basic factors, bipolar disorder brings
additional challenges (Jamison and Akiskal, 1983, Keck et al., 1996). Patients may remember
past hypomanic episodes fondly and may desire future episodes. Also, patients may not be
convinced of the need for preventive treatment. Under these conditions, it is no surprise that
adherence to mood stabilizers is so poor, despite the evidence for a clear link between nonadherence
and relapse
