A person's income has a lot to do with their standard of living. Generally speaking, the people who live and work in the rural areas of Thailand earn a lower salary when compared to people who live and work in the cities. Unlike developed countries where farmers are often wealthy and have high status in society, the farmers of Thailand are poor. A worker inthe city of Bangkok, for example, may earn a salary that could be as much as 6 times higher than that of a farmers. There are many government projects to provide equal opportunities in both rural and urban areas and over time the government of Thailand has improved the quality of life for thr people living in the rural areas. Increased access to efucation, better medical care and improved sanitation are a few examples.
