Almost every page of a newspaper contain at least one cut accompanied by a caption, or cutline. The caption, appearing beneath or beside the scene in it. When a reader looks at a cut he may not know what is talking place in the scene or who is in it. The caption explains that to him.
A cut usually exists as part of a news article to make it more interesting, some cuts appear with only a few lines of caption.
A reader whose mother tongue is not English can enhance his vocabulary by looking at cuts and reading captions. If he look at a cut abd reads the caption undereath it, he will learn the word or phrase that describes the action, event or person in the cut. Cuts are like visual alda that help a reader to better understand that whole text he is going to read - he associates what he reads with the cut and gets a thorough understanding of the texts
