An extensive review of this topic reported that the compliance
to oral nutritional supplements was greater (91%) with
supplements having a high energy density (2 kcal/mL), in liquid
supplements versus solid ones. Clinical benefits occurred
when the intake was in the range of 250 to 600 kcal/d for
5 wk [1]. Furthermore, emerging data in weight-losing cancer
patients support the use of supplements enriched with u-3
fatty acids [2] or with leucine, and experimental studies
support the administration of supplements preferentially as a
bolus [3,4].
