The Okhotsk Sea (OS) is one of the marginal seas of the North Pacific
Ocean. It is bounded by the Kamchatka Peninsula, Siberia, Sakhalin
Island, Hokkaido, and the Kuril Islands. About two-thirds of the OS is
covered with ice in winter. In the simplest schemes, the OS circulation
is cyclonic and connected to the cyclonic circulation of the subarctic
North Pacific through the Kuril Island Chain
