Delivered contaminant loads can display a temporal variability on the overall pollutant transfers to marine environments ( 14 , 15 ) due to specific and time limited catastrophic events such as calamitous flooding ( 16 ). In these cases, significant concerns exist
regarding the potential toxic hazards for food safety, due to the increase of chemical contaminants levels in the marine environment with a consequent enhancement of pollutant accumulation in seafood ( 17).
