General awareness of environmental issues is increasing rapidly, and today environmental considerations are an obvious factor in the development of marine diesel engines (Wright,
1999; ABS, 1999; CIMAC, 1997). A study of the exhaust gas emissions from a diesel engine represents a challenge to both the engine designers and the makers of exhaust gas treatment equipment. It is also a valuable tool for reaching a deeper understanding of the engine combustion process. Such understanding has led to more serious treatment of environmental issues in marine industry.
