In the famous opening of this last movement from Picture at an Exhibition, Ravel fills out and doubles the bass part with two bassoons range. The grace notes in Musorgsky's original piano part, which emphasize the piano's bass range, are disregarded in Ravel's orchestration; they are superfluous in the orchestral version, given the strength of the tuba and contrabassoon. The timpani,which usually support the roots of the chorts, basically have apedal on the dominant pitch, Bb, instead. This pedal is finally resolved when the winds come in at measure 13 and Eb predominates in the timpani
