De La Vi˜na et al. (2001) assert that, similar to cultivation in aliquid medium, the DPS provides a higher quantity of nutrients readily usable by the explants being grown, because there is nophysical barrier present in the medium in these systems, which facilitates increased availability of the nutrients to the explants.Another important purpose for using a DPS is to reduce the manip-ulation during the in vitro multiplication stages, since there is noneed to carry out constant subcultures, as the explants can bemaintained for several months under these conditions. In addition, using a DPS potentially results in decreased expenditures on gellingagents for the growth medium (Scherwinski-Pereira et al., 2012).
