1. Suspend the funnel using a ring clamp or another appropriate clamp.
2. Be certain that the stopcock is closed before you add any liquid into the funnel.
3. Add your organic layer to the funnel.
4. Add roughly an equal amount of your aqueous phase to the funnel. If the aqueous phase contains Na2CO3 or NaHCO3, add slowly to control the effervescence.
5. Swirl the funnel gently to slowly mix the layers and control the rate of evolution of carbon dioxide.
6. When the evolution of carbon dioxide or gaseous product has largely subsided, place the stopper on the top of the funnel. If it is a Teflon stopper
