We used an ocean model to simulate with high temporal and
spatial resolution the hydrodynamics of the tropical coastal lagoon
Estero de Urias. Model results indicate that the Urias coastal lagoon
hydro dynamics is governed by astronomical tides, topography and
salinity gradients. The estuary can be classified as a hyper saline thermal
and inverse estuary. The complex lagoon morphology
causes strong tidal current differences between three main lagoon
zones, the Harbor, and the Intermediate and Upper areas, with age
tracer means of ~15 days, ~30 days and ~70 days, respectively, in
agreement with Urias coastal lagoon anti-estuarine behavior
