Select bank accounts for testing from the summary schedule of cash and cash equivalents. For accounts selected obtain the period end bank reconciliation and bank statements at the period end and those immediately subsequent to the balance sheet date and perform the following procedures:
• Verify the mathematical accuracy of the reconciliation.
• Vouch the bank statement balance shown in the reconciliation to the bank statement [or returned bank confirmation request].
• Trace the cash balances shown on the bank reconciliation to the cash balances in the general ledger.
• Select additive items from the bank reconciliation (e.g. deposits in transit, wire transfers, intercompany or interbank transfers, and bank adjustments) and vouch them to relevant documentation and assess whether they were recorded in the proper period.
• Select subtractive items from the bank reconciliation (e.g. outstanding checks, wire transfers, intercompany or interbank transfers, and bank adjustments) and vouch them to relevant documentation and assess whether they were recorded in the proper period.
• Investigate any unusual reconciling items and assess whether they have been recorded appropriately.
