Accumulated side effects
If a person experiences several side effects concurrently, this
may have a more adverse effect on their well-being or may
lead to medication omission. Therefore, the cumulative
impact of a range of side effects was further explored. As a
cumulative side-effect score of certain levels may be important
clinically, scores were classified, in accordance with the
LUNSERS, into four groups: low (0–40), medium (41–80),
high (81–100) and very high (>101), based on the total
scores for side effects (Table 1). While about 57% of men and
44% women experienced accumulated side effects of low
clinical importance, over 40% participants of both sexes
reported side effects that were of medium clinical importance
(male, 41%; female, 48%), and a small proportion experienced
side effects of high clinical importance (male, 1Æ8%;
female, 8%).
