A semi-structured questionnaire was administered to 160 farmers in Western Kenya to compare the profitability of
different soil fertility technologies using farm yard manure as a baseline strategy. Partial budgets and descriptive statistics were used
in data analysis. The results showed that the most profitable combinations were manure and chemical fertiliser for Kale and farm yard
manure, chemical fertiliser and biomass transfer (Tithonia diversifolia) for tomato. The highest marginal rate of return was achieved
from a combination of manure and chemical fertiliser for both Kale and tomato. Although a combination of biomass transfer did not
achieve the highest grossmargins and MRR, it improved income from kale and tomato. Consequently, the study recommends that
farmers use inorganic fertilisers, but use the relatively cheaper biomass transfer where they cannot afford fertilisers
