INTRODUCTION
The newer and rapidly changing technology and dramatically
expanding knowledge in critical care has
made it essential for nurses to establish their own
domain of practice. As scientific knowledge continues
to increase, nurses will continue to be challenged to
keep current with new developments. It is essential
that nurses make use of the available technology to
best meet the patient’s needs. Evidence-based practice
is increasingly important in the field of nursing because
nurses are constantly involved in the process of
decision making, patient teaching, clinical practice,
and better patient outcomes. It is important for the
nurse to review studies that identify benefits and adverse
effects of normal saline on endotracheal suctioning
in critically ill patients. These studies will support
the evidence-based practice required to provide best
and safe nursing care.
