Lung cancer accounts for around 13% of the
total number of new cancer cases each year
worldwide (WCRFI 2008). In the UK, there ar
approximately 42,000 new cases of lung cance
diagnosed each year (CRUK 2013). It is also th
most common cause of death from cancer, wit
31,500 deaths per year (CRUK 2013). Around
80% of patients present with advanced disease
and most will die within one year of diagnosis
(Health and Social Care Information Centre
2012). Less than 10% of patients will live for
five years or more (CRUK 2013). Although it
is recognised that lung cancer diagnosis peaks
between the ages of 75 and 84, more people
under the age of 60 are being diagnosed with
the disease (CRUK 2013).
