Indymedia’s practices and philosophies are closely aligned with several of the theoretical advancements and implications outlined by Habermas (1974), McQuail (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, 1993), and Tocqueville (Ehrenberg, 1999). These conceptual aspects are demonstrated and understood in terms of how Indymedia sets its goals, function, and purpose, as well as the ways in which it encourages and supports civic participation and activities. Indymedia promotes a learning culture of civil society by encouraging its audience to take an active role, either by publishing their own material through its open-publishing format or creating their own IMC. In turn, Indymedia promotes an outreach and teach approach through the coordination of local and global activist events, protests, screenings of the organization’s documentaries, and other activities.
