In these models, strain energy density is used
as a feed-back control variable for functional adaptation of bone,
whereby homeostatic strain energy density distribution is assumed
as the remodeling objective. The first approach under the direction
of Huiskes [4–6] assumes that, the variation of the elastic modulus
is proportional to the difference between the actual strain energy
density and a referential strain energy density.
