Responses to the questions above might relate to examining a student's understanding of a mathematical concept, learning more about a strategy being used, extending student thinking, or assessing comprehension of a task to be solved. Depending on the student response, follow-up questions can center on a variety of learner-related need, such as the confidence level of the student in extending a response or in taking it another direction (e.g., "Is your response reasonable?). The interview prompt (fig. 5.2) was developed to help organize and guide the types of questions and responses that emerge with the use of this CBFA technique.
