A. baumannii has become increasingly multidrug resistant
during the last few decades.26 In the late 1980s, resistance
to carbapenems was first described and today many of the
isolates from hospitalized patients are susceptible only to
tigecycline and polymyxins.27,28 In Poland, carbapenem
resistance rates have increased for isolates from ICU
patients since 2000. Wro´blewska et al. reported that
A. baumannii BSI accounted for 18.2% of all BSIs and the
incidence of imipenem resistance was as high as 40% in two
ICUs in Warsaw.29
