However, MIT did not have full access to the machine. Each day, MIT could only operate the machine for eight hours. Of the other sixteen hours, eight were given to all the other colleges and universities in New England, and the other half was for IBM’s personal use. This may not have been as grand as a problem if the president of IBM wasn’t involved in yacht racing. All the yachts were assigned handicaps based on a very convoluted formula. Since these were the interests of the president of the company, as soon as a request came in to calculate a handicap, any process was to be stopped to run the formula regardless of whose time it was or how far along the current program was. As one could imagine, MIT got quite tired of their programs being interrupted for yacht racing purposes.
